The Hitachi is a corded personal massager and is designed for eternal non-penetrative use, which to most people translates to clitoral stimulation. With that in mind, let us begin with why a single man would order a Hitachi in the first place. The way I looked at it, it was highly unlikely that this thing would be money poorly spent. First, off vibration can feel good on a guy and I’ve have heard some good things (as well as some so-so things) about the Hitachi from other male reviewers. Secondly, I don’t plan on having my toy reviews be solo projects for all eternity you know. Even if it did nothing for me, it still likely to do wonders for a future partner. Thirdly, the Hitachi isn’t truly a sex toy it is a repurposed massager so I could always re-repurpose the toy as a regular back/shoulder massager. Lastly, what kind of sex toy reviewer would I be if I didn’t have some contact with something so iconic?

The Hitachi Magic Wand

Design and Operation

As you can see by the pic its design is straight forward, no frills, utilitarian. It is white, 12 inches long and weights roughly a pound and a quarter. The vibrating head is about the size of a tennis ball and is roughly 2.5 inches in diameter. Take note that this is a rather large surface area so this isn’t going to provide pinpoint stimulation. A single switch in the center lets you switch between the two settings: Low (5000 rpm) and High (6000 rpm). Operation is therefore extremely simple, put it up against your spot of choice, flip the switch to one of the two settings, and let the Hitachi do its magic. However, be prepared for some noise this is definitely not a silent or subtle toy. It is in fact extremely loud. If noise is an issue for you then you might have to pass on this one.

As you can see this thing is big. Therefore, it might be difficult to yield if you have small hands or are trying to use it to stimulate yourself or your partner in the middle of sex. This also means it is not a good choice if you want something that is portable. A second downside is that the power cord is a little short, coming in at only 6 feet. You will likely need an extension cord unless you use it very close to an outlet. There is a Hitachi speed controller available, which would give you the extra length while giving you more speed control. I don’t own one so I can’t report on it effectiveness (and it seems to me a lamp dimmer would accomplish the same function for a lot less). The trade off for the bulkiness is that this thing is extremely powerful and while it may be annoying to be limited by the cord it does mean no fussing with batteries and no chance of the toy going dead midsession (unless there’s a blackout or something). Unfortunately, there is a tradeoff for its power as well. The toy tends to run hot so you’ll need to let it rest between sessions to cool down. The manufacturer recommends a maximum of 25 minutes of use with 30 minutes of rest before the next use. You should also be mindful about where you use it i.e. using it under sheets, pillows can lead to overheating. (BTW the power consumption is 20 Watts for those of you monitoring your energy consumption.)

Although the design makes this thing difficult to hide, that fact that it does not look like a sex toy does give you a plausible cover story if it should be discovered by unwanted eyes. It is after all in its original incarnation a back massager, if discovered you can just claim your using it for those sore muscles aches. This goes at least double for a male, who but the most sex savvy is going to suspect that a guy is using this thing to get off. At worse they are either going to think your using it to please your girl (not as embarrassing as them thinking you’re using it to please yourself), or using it to soothe back aches from all the hard manly work you’ve been up to .

Material, Cleaning, and Safety Concerns

The Hitachi is made out of phthalate free plastic, which is it not very porous and is easy to clean; it still however can’t be completely sterilized between uses. Therefore, put a condom on it if you’re going to be sharing the thing with any one you aren’t fluid-bonded with (and I’m sure this thing is will become a play party favorite if you do). You might want to put a condom on the thing if you see yourself getting any bodily fluids on the head of the thing too (getting bodily fluids on it generally isn’t problem for me as you’ll see). You can also reduce hygiene concerns by buying a sleeve made out of pure silicone, like the Pleasure Dome. Some like the Jollies Hitachi attachment can also turn the Hitachi into a more of a normal vibrator; I have yet to try out these attachments so I can’t comment on anything but the general superiority of silicone in sterilization. It should go without saying but make sure not to get the thing wet or you risk an electrical short. If you enjoy your play in wet or humid places, like your bath, this most definitely is not the toy for you. On that note if the thing starts working intermediately, that could be a sign of an electrical short so turn it off and unplug it. Also, be mindful of overheating as I mentioned above. Like many appliances, the manufacturer recommends unplugging it when not in use. (Of course, no one ever follows that recommendation; my stands proudly connected by my bedside ready to perform its duty.)

To clean this toy wipe it off with a damp, not wet, washcloth. Make sure the toy is unpluged when you do so and that you do not get the toy wet.

Pleasure and Use

It may surprise considering my (over)exuberance that my first experience with this toy was a mediocre one. I put this thing on the directly on shaft and while the vibrations felt good going down the length of my cock, it wasn’t anything spectacular. However, as I experimented I discovered how to unlock the potential of this thing. First trick, I no longer put it directly on my skin instead there is always a thin piece of fabric, usually my boxers, separating me from the head of the thing; putting that thing directly on my skin is asking for chaffing and soreness. Second, I only put it on my shaft to warm up now, when I ready for the show to really start I either move the thing up putting it near/on the head of my penis or put it on my perineum (the “taint”). These small changes elevated the toy from mediocre to my favorite toy by far. This may seem like a bad thing for a male but as some of you may know it is ejaculation not orgasm that has a refractory period in men. Therefore, when I say orgasms I mean orgasms; including multiple orgasms, I average 3-5 orgasms per session with this and the current record is 18 orgasms in one session. Combining the power of the Hitachi to induce both ejaculatory and non-ejaculatory orgasm has also given me what I can only call a “blended orgasm”.

I bring all this up not only to illustrate the power of the Hitachi but also to highlight an important point about the Hitachi. You may have to explore a bit to find the right combination of placement, setting, etc in order to get maximum effect; in my case a few small changes made a world of difference. The rewards if you happen to find the right combination to make it work as well for you as it did for me are well worth the effort. I get the general impression, thought I could be wrong, that most guys don’t experiment enough with this thing before handing it back to their women in their life.

Lastly, this toy also has applications in BDSM play. This toy is a good choice for forced orgasm play, so much so that there are orgasm belts designed for this very propose. All the belts I’ve seen have been designed for women, and I don’t know if these belts will hit the right spot on a male. I haven’t done any force orgasm play (yet) but the potential is obvious.

Does it play well with others?

I also love to combine the Hitachi with other toys. The simplest is simply putting a butt plug in and letting my muscles have something to wrap around during my orgasms. Who is it for?

I already listed some possible reason not to get a Hitachi (noise, I play near water, etc) already if none of these scream: “that me think I will pass”; I recommend everyone takes the Hitachi for a spin… eventually. This thing is intimidating and ridiculously powerful so I would not recommend it for a sex toy virgin. I would recommend they get a decent vibrator as their training wheels and buy this as soon as they feel comfortable using something with more umph. Given the fact that this toy is capable of producing some very interesting results in me (multiple orgasms, blended orgasms, etc) I highly recommend every guy try this but again only after becoming comfortable with sex toys and their own bodies. The only situation I would recommend a Hitachi to a complete newbie is if they happened to be in the market for a standard back massager, might as well get the multitasker then.

Closing thoughts

The Hitachi completely blew me away. Any toy that redefines your definition of orgasm automatically earns high marks. Its big, its load, and it requires some practice to find the method that works for you, but when you do…woah! This thing deserves a galaxy of stars.
