Review: Ryder

The Ryder by Tantus

Cut to the chase: In short, this is a simple but excellent butt plug: filling; easy to insert; stays in place; made of body safe materials. Like a true master, this Ryder doesn’t go for anything showy or flashy and instead aims to do the simple with (near) falseness execution and effectiveness. Read ahead for more.

Materials: Cleaning and Safety Concerns

This toy like all Tantus plugs is made of 100% platinum silicone, which is non-porous, hypoallergenic, phthalates and latex free and can be easy sterilize (which is essential if you are going to be sharing the toy). To sterilize the toy, wash it with a 10% bleach solution; boil the toy for several minutes or wash it in your dishwasher on the top rack sans-any detergent. To clean without sterilizing it, just use soap and water or a toy cleaner. The only down side to silicone is that it can have a bad reaction with silicone lubes possibly damaging the toy. Use only water-based lubes or at least do a test patch of silicone-based lubes on the bottom of the toy to see if the lube and the toy will have a reaction. Silicone is a durable material that with minimal care can last a lifetime; so no special storage precautions are need for this toy (although silicone dose tend to be a bit of a lint magnet).

Design and Dimensions

The Ryder is torpedo shaped plug, with a total length of 4.25” and an insertable length of 3.75”. The toy has a moderate diameter of 1.4”. The base is just under 2.5” inches across (2 3/8” by my measurements) and 1” wide. One odd thing about this base, which I wouldn’t have even noticed if another review didn’t comment on it, is that one side of the base is slightly longer than the other. The difference is, minor 1/8” of an inch in my estimate, and it made no difference to me which end was pointing which way that 1/8” of an inch may make a difference to someone else so it worth noting.

Lastly, the toy is available in three colors Purple (the one I got as you can see from the pic above), Copper and Black.

Pleasure and Use

This toy is simple and straightforward in its design, no fancy curves or angles, however what it lacks in complexity or novelty it more than makes up with perfect execution. Starting from the top of the toy, the torpedo tip is rounded at the top with the tip having almost the same diameter as the rest of the shaft there is no gradual taper to this toy. This may seem like it would make for difficult insertion but to my surprise; the toy slid in without any difficulty; the torpedo design was surprisingly effective just lube up, push a bit and it just slides into place. Removal was also surprisingly easy. Continuing the toy’s torpedo design provides a very good feeling of fullness both for play and for extended wear. During extended the toy torpedo base makes it presence know nicely, giving you that “I’m being naughty and none of the people around me can tell” feeling, without being uncomfortable or distracting. Moving on, the neck of the toy provides sufficient contrast with the rest of the toy that it never slipped out of place (nor did I ever fear that it might).

Lastly, the toy’s base, the base is often what makes or breaks a plug and the Ryder base is one of the most comfortable I’ve tried. The base is oblong and stays comfortably between the cheeks. Again, simplicity works wonders here unlike round or hourglass bases this simple design creates no uncomfortable pressure points maximizing comfort. I have used this plug, for short-term play, all-day wear and for in public wear all with any discomfort (or again the toy falling out).

The toy is near prefect in my opinion but there are some potential cons you should keep in mind nonetheless. Firstly, the toy’s base is on the flimsily side. Extreme players may want to take note of this flimsiness as the wings of the base could theoretically slip inside you if you apply to much pressure to the base. This is unlikely to occur without some pressure being applied to the base so it shouldn’t cause any problems for extended wear but it is something to keep in mind for play/masturbation. I never had any problem with that with the Ryder but other toy reviewers have commented on this being a problem for them so you might want to read their perspectives before purchasing: ScottA transcendix1. Secondly, this isn’t the toy for those that like there plugs to have cross over potential as anal dildos or prostate massagers. The toy’s design isn’t good for thrusting and the lack of any curves means it not going to be hit your P-spot (those looking for a plug with more cross over potential might want to check out something like the LELO Bob). Lastly, this is great as a midsized plug but I do wish Tantus would make a Ryder large for when I am in size king mode, but that more toys I’d wish they make thing than a con :) . Although on that note, the Ryder would make a good warm-up to larger plugs.

Who’s it for?

The Ryder’s best application in my opinion is as an extended wear plug; if your in the market for an extended wear plug this is a must. Despite its easy insertion it may be a bit much for an anal virgin so I wouldn’t recommend it as the very first thing to try out on your back door, but if you have even minimal experience the Ryder is an excellent choice. Those that like a lot of fancy belles and whistle may also be disappointed in this toy, but then again it might also be a good reminder of the value simplicity, so try it anyway  .

Packaging

This toy comes in Tantus’s standard clear plastic packaging. The packaging while is tasteful isn’t very discreet, something to consider in a gift giving scenario. You could theoretically use the packaging for storage of the toy but I find it poor for that purpose. For those going green the packaging is recyclable and Tantus is committed to eco-friendly manufacturing practices.

Closing Thoughts

There really not much more for me to say. The Ryder is one of the best butt plugs I own and recommend it highly especially if your in the market for a good extend wear plug.
